W8 Gravimetric Device – size, mass density and weight of 3D spheroids

The W8 (pronounced ‘weight’) from Cell Dynamics is a gravimetric for the quantitative measurement of size, weight and mass density for spherical biological samples. It can be used for 3D spheroids and organoids  ranging from 100 microns to 600 microns.

Accurate and precise knowledge of mass density, shape, size and weight of spheroid like cells or cell aggregates provides valuable insights into understanding processes into outcomes for assays. Our early applications include cancer research, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The W8 physical cytometry system offers a paradigm shift by enabling standardisation of 3D heterogeneous models.

Description

The ability to quantify 3D cell culture models has until now been hampered by the fact that the convention is to use a 2D technique such as microscopy, to quantify and characterise a 3D object.

The W8 is a benchtop gravimetric device which for the first time, enables the quantitative measurement of size, weight and mass density 3D spheroids and organoids.

Gathering precise information on mass density, shape, size and weight of cells or cell aggregates, is crucial for a range of  applications including cancer research, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The W8 is a significant step forward in the standardization of 3D Biology heterogenous models.

With an intuitive user interface, the W8 technology offers a groundbreaking weighing method to perform quality control of 3D cell culture to quantitatively evaluate in vitro assays from the physical point of view.
