SUMMARY:Molecular Microbial Ecology Group Meeting 2025
DESCRIPTION:Swift Analytical are proud to attend the MMEG meeting in partnership with On-Chip Biotechnologies\, manufacturers of droplet-based microfluidic systems utilising advanced technologies for single cell analysis and high throughput screening. Key applications include applications including novel microorganisms screening from the environment\, development of antibody-producing cells and directed evolution of enzyme. \nNow in its 31st year\, the Molecular Microbial Ecology Group (MMEG) meeting returns 15-16 December 2025 at the Alan Walters Building\, University of Birmingham\, hosted by Professor James McDonald. \nMMEG is a welcoming\, lively space for early career researchers and group leaders to share their work and connect across the microbial ecology community. This year’s programme spans all aspects of microbial ecology\, including environmental microbiology\, biogeochemical cycling\, host-microbe interactions and applied microbiology\, with nearly all talks delivered by early career speakers. \nThe event features plenary sessions\, posters\, and exhibition. Abstract submissions are invited for a poster with optional 1-minute-1-slide ‘poster pitch’ presentation. You can also submit an abstract for a 15-minute talk. Abstract submission is open for all career stages from undergraduate\, master’s students\, technical staff\, PhD researchers and Postdocs.

SUMMARY:Label-free\, biophysical readouts for analyzing 3D cell culture-based in vitro assays
DESCRIPTION:3D culture systems\, like spheroids and organoids\, represent useful in vitro models for drug screening and\, more broadly\, for disease modelling. The possibility to characterize spheroid’s biophysics would considerably increase the knowledge of critical factors in 3D biology\, such as cellular density and size-dependent mass transport. In this regard\, the dataset of biophysical observables\, collected with the W8 Physical Cytometer\, paves the way to a new\, label-free method for the analysis of 3D cell culture-based assays. \nThe format is a roundtable discussion comprising current users and experts utilising CellDynamics novel patented W8 system. \n\n\n\nMarianna Kruithof-de Julio PhD \nDirector of Organoid Core @ University of Bern (Bern\, CH) \n\n\nSpartaco Santi PhD \nHead of Digital Microscopy Center @ Institute of Molecular Genetics – CNR (Bologna\, IT)

SUMMARY:Networking matters: Connecting cells into 3D spheroids and their potential in research and pre-clinical applications
DESCRIPTION:The standardization of 3D in vitro model systems in cancer and stem cell research as well as in pharmaceutical applications is an indispensable process due to their potential to resemble the in vivo environment more properly than common 2D systems. Traditional 2D cell cultures offer only restricted cell-cell contacts in one dimension which leads to unnatural cell phenotypes\, cell behavior and drug-target interactions. On the other hand\, cell spheroids – a dense 3D cell network – allow cell-cell contact in all dimensions for more precise validation of cell based assays. Different technologies are available for development of spheroid-based model systems\, which differ in their applications and their potential to standardize 3D based assays for pharmaceutical as well as medical research. In this talk we will compare different commercially available Low-Attachment systems in their ability to produce consistent spheroid data for pharmaceutical and medical research. \nTo attend\, please register at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_yTVEMlEmTxCvjfH3RgfbRg

SUMMARY:Physical cytometry for 3D cell culture - rapid simultaneous determination of weight\, size and mass density of spheroids and organoids
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nWith the worldwide need for uniformity in 3D cell culture methods\, the focus is no longer whether physical characterization will factor into a workflow\, but how is it possible to precisely assess the homogeneity of the 3D sample populations. The scientific landscape strongly requires researchers to correlate physical parameter with those derived from the commonly used in vitro tests. And most importantly\, when it comes to culturing 3D cell models as spheroids or organoids\, their biophysics holds a biological relevance\, thereby representing a potential source of data variability. \nIn this webinar\, we will showcase the W8 physical cytometer – the only fully automated system for the physical characterization of 3D sphere-like biological samples. The combination of CellDynamics’ groundbreaking microfluidic technology with bright-field image-based analysis simultaneously provides a sample’s mass density\, weight and size values in less than 10 minutes. In addition\, the W8 is able to  sort a target sub-population using pre-selected ranges for these parameters.

SUMMARY:Patterning tissues for cell microenvironment engineering using the Biopixlar single-cell resolution bioprinter
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting talk by Fluicell CTO Dr. Gavin Jeffries on using high-resolution bioprinting to control cell microenvironment. This webinar is co-organized by the Tissue and Cell Eningeering Society (TCES) and Swift Analytical Ltd. \nThe seminar is chaired by Professor Sarah Cartmell of The University of Manchester. \nAbstract:\nThe progress of bioprinting technologies and applications has accelerated tremendously in recent years. However\, reproducing the complexity of tissue biology\, especially mimicking the architecture of cellular microenvironment on an individual cell level remains a challenge.\nIn this presentation we will demonstrate how Fluicell employs hydrodynamically confined devices to build biological tissues from individual cells. Furthermore\, we will demonstrate the advantages of patterning tissues and controlling the microenvironment using an open-volume microfluidic approach.

SUMMARY:Webinar: 3D bioprinting with single cell precision for the construction of tissue and disease models
DESCRIPTION:The progress of bioprinting technologies and applications has accelerated tremendously in recent years. However\, reproducing the complexity of tissue biology\, especially mimicking architecture of cellular microenvironment on an individual cell level remains a challenge. Fluicell’s microfluidics based technology enables position of individual cells in complex 2D and 3D patterns for generation of multi-cellular tissues with great accuracy and precision. Moreover\, the technology enables tissue model investigations after printing by precise delivery of drugs or other compounds to specific areas in the model. The presentation will focus on Fluicell’s microfluidics technology and different examples of bioprinted tissue models and applications. \nPlease sign up using the link below or cutting and pasting the following into your browser: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_3caYzebGRXabvEEi8ngEzA \n  \n
